The number of students who want to major in Psychology exceeds the number who can be adequately instructed by the faculty. Therefore meeting the minimum hour and GPA requirements is not a guarantee of admission to the Psychology major.
The primary criteria will be overall GPA and hours taken at UT Austin.
Other factors include: number of PSY courses taken, evidence of long-term interest in Psychology (e.g., research, work in health/human services, etc.), total hours completed, and whether or not the student plans to switch majors or add PSY as a double major.

Updated 8-1-2025
The Department of Psychology only accepts internal transfer applications during the Spring semester for Fall admission. Our next application cycle will begin in Spring 2026 for Fall 2026 admission.
To be eligible to apply for internal transfer into the Psychology undergraduate program, a student must satisfy all below requirements by the end of the semester in which they are applying :
- Watch Information Session Video & Complete Qualtrics Form: Must watch the internal transfer information session video and submit the Qualtrics form in the current academic year (Fall 2025 or Spring 2026)
- UT Austin Overall GPA : Minimum 3.25
- UT Austin PSY GPA : Minimum 3.25
- PSY course(s) : At least one taken for a letter grade in-residence at UT Austin (before or during the semester you are applying)
- Hours at UT : Complete minimum 12 hours for a letter grade in-residence at UT Austin (excludes credit-by-exam, extension, correspondence and transfer credit)
- Latest one can apply : Maximum of four long semesters after high school graduation

- Apply : Apply through the UT Austin Internal Transfer Application portal from February 1st 2026 - May 1st 2026 by 11:59pm
Notes:
- The information session video and Qualtrics form is an updated requirement beginning in Fall 2025 for the Spring 2026 application.
- All students who successfully complete the Internal Transfer Information Session Qualtrics Form will receive a written confirmation sent by Secure Academic Note (SAN) within five (5) business days of completing the form. If a student does not receive a SAN confirmation within the 5-business day window, then it is the student's responsibility to notify our office to investigate/resolve the issue. Only one (1) Qualtrics form is required per application cycle, and it must be submitted again if they choose to reapply in a future application cycle.
- Attendance of an internal transfer information session prior to fall 2025 will not satisfy the new requirement to watch the video and complete the Qualtrics form.
- Priority is given to applicants with less than 75 hours. Students are still encouraged to apply if they are past the four-semester mark and/or credit preference. Every application will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Must add PSY as first or second major only. If a student is admitted to the PSY major with two pre-existing majors, they must drop one major to add the PSY major. Psychology students cannot double major in Neuroscience or Behavioral and Social Data Science.
- In-residence credit means credit taken through UT Austin and excludes credit-by-exam, extension, correspondence, and transfer credit. Current enrollment will be considered during the semester you are applying (ie, Spring 2026 courses), but not future courses (ie, Summer 2026 courses).
- A student may only apply twice to change their major to Psychology.
