Frequently Asked Questions for Internal Transfer
- After I have attended an info session and applied, how soon will I be officially declared an Economics major?
If you are not currently in the College of Liberal Arts, major changes go into effect at the start of the following long semester. If you are currently in COLA and adding Economics as an additional major, it will go into effect at the start of the following long semester. If you are currently in COLA and you are transferring to Economics and deleting your other major, the major change will go into effect within a few weeks of when you apply.
- Is admission to the Economics major competitive? Is there a GPA cut-off?
No, currently there is no GPA requirement and approval is not on a competitive basis. Our goal is to accept all students who want Economics as their major as long as they have attended an info session.
- Do I need to meet a minimum number of credit hours completed in-residence to apply?
No, you may apply during your first semester.
- Is there a maximum number of hours taken or semesters completed to be eligible to apply?
No.
- I need to declare the major now in order to graduate on time!
We definitely want to support your efforts to graduate on time! Non-majors may register for restricted upper division Economics courses on the last day of registration provided stated prerequisites are met and if seats are available. However, you will need to follow the stated internal transfer process and deadlines to officially declare the major.
I still have questions. Can I talk to an advisor? If you still have questions about the major or the application process, please attend one of our information sessions. Information sessions are REQUIRED for declaring the major. We cannot meet with prospective students at this time. For any other questions please contact: ApplyEcon@austin.utexas.edu
